Physical Education Program
Park Side is now enjoying having PE teacher Ms. Eve Joseph provide physical education activities to the 4th and 5th grade students. There has long been a school-wide effort on the part of all teachers to provide health education and activities for the students in support of building healthy habits and strong young bodies. Ms. Joseph’s classes emphasize these goals. This year, we are adding a volley-ball net to the upper field, basketball and soccer goals, and exercise bars.
Peaceful Playgrounds
The playground is an essential part of any school and every community. Children spend many hours of their day occupying themselves with what the playground has to offer. To expand our playground possibilities, Park Side recently purchased the Peaceful Playground Program. With it come multiple sets of stencils that will allow us to paint as many as 40 new and exciting games for the children to play on the blacktop. We also purchased huge maps of the United States and the world to promote geography and international awareness. This unique program introduces children and school staff to many new choices of cooperative activities at recess. The program provides blueprints designed to assist with measurements, layout, spacing and game placement, as well as provide an overall picture of the final design outcome of a Peaceful Playground. We need your help! Sebastopol Hardware has graciously donated many colored paints for the Peaceful Playgrounds, but we need to organize a painting party to layout the stencils and paint the lines. We will be recruiting parents for a painting party during Back to School night. A table will be set up for sign-up and information purposes. Come join us!
Park Side Music
Park Side students are already clapping, dancing and singing up
a storm. Each K-2 classroom will have a six-week music unit taught by
district music teacher Beth
Ann Turner. Third graders will be learning recorders in their general
music lessons
every week. In addition, each class will rehearse a song to perform at
the Winter Festival on December 8th.
Mark your calendars now - you won't want to miss this special event!
Toolbox Program
This program addresses the
issues
that surround bullying. Bully prevention is a large
part of our Toolbox Program, through which we introduce information
about emotional growth and conflict resolution. The tools the children
are taught help them as they develop social skills and interact daily
with other
children. The program is delivered on a weekly basis to each classroom.
These lessons build on each other from
week to week, and are constantly reinforced by classroom assistants and
teachers, both in and
out of the classrooms.
Rainbow House
Rainbox House is another primary intervention program
allowing
children in need to have the undivided weekly attention of an adult
buddy. It allows victims of bullies, and even bullies, a safe haven to
explore their places int he social
world. Firentship groups present similar opportunities for these
students, and allow
guidance in dealing with the social climate. We also have a wealth of
books available that give guidance to individual children or classroom
groups.
