I have been a teacher in the Sebastopol Union School District since 1992. At that time I was hired to teach in the Multi-Age Program, also known as the Open Alternative Education Program. I taught third through fifth grades for about 15 years. It was a very creative and innovative program. Having three grades in the classroom necessitated that I learn how to differentiate my curriculum so that the tasks and concepts I taught suited each child's ability to learn. As the Reading Specialist for Park Side School I continue to tailor the curriculum/program I teach to meet the needs of individual students.
In 2005 I returned to college/graduate school in order to learn more about teaching reading to beginning readers. I wanted to become a Reading Specialist for our younger students. Previously, as a third through 5th grade teacher, most of my students came to me already knowing how to read at a basic level. The instruction I received at SSU was excellent. I've been able to implement a very effective reading support program that includes paper books for students to read (and keep) at home with parents/guardians.
I love teaching children and sharing in their enthusiasm for leaning new information and new skills. When students realize that they CAN learn to read, especially if they've been struggling, they are able to enjoy reading and learning rather than feel anxiety and stress, which can act as a stop sign on the path to learning. I want children to be able to learn whatever interests them and achieve their dreams. My hope is that our students/children will initiate positive and healthy actions in the world. This is more likely if they find success and joy in school.
My husband and I have two daughters. They went through our Sebastopol Union Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade and went on to college. My now adult daughters live and work in San Francisco, both in the educational realm. Their childhood years passed so quickly. Be sure to cherish these early years with your young children.
In my spare time I play music with friends, walk on the beach, travel as much as possible, attend the Kate Wolf Music Festival every summer, read amazing books, and spend time with my husband and daughters, who continue to be the joy of my life.
