Dear SUSD families,

We invite you to attend an upcoming Parent/Caregiver Education Night focused on how our school community addresses racism, discrimination, and the use of bias-based behavior/language. The session will be facilitated by Phoebe Smith, who will lead the teaching and discussion for the evening. All SUSD caregivers/parents are invited.

January 21st - 6:00-7:00pm @ Brook Haven Middle School MPR

Creating a safe, inclusive school culture is most effective when students, staff, and families work together. This workshop will share the practices, language, and frameworks we use at school so caregivers can reinforce the same messages and expectations at home.

During the session, we will discuss:

  • How our schools teach students to recognize and respond to bias-based behavior/language

  • What it means to be an Upstander, someone who safely supports inclusion and interrupts harm

  • Practical strategies caregivers can use to support these conversations with their children

  • Resources and tools families can access to continue learning and support these conversations at home

We recognize that discussing these topics can feel uncomfortable or unfamiliar for some families. This event is designed to be supportive, informative, and practical- offering tools to help caregivers engage in age-appropriate conversations and reinforce positive behavior at home. True prevention happens when the lessons learned in the classroom are echoed at home and when expectations align.

Research shows that peer intervention is one of the most effective ways to stop behaviors in the moment. By strengthening our shared understanding and vocabulary, we can work together to build a school culture that is supportive, inclusive, and focused on growth.

We hope you will join us for this important conversation and partnership.

Warmly,

Sara Gramm, Molly Bulwa & Rachel Lasek
