October Around SUSD

As we settle into the school year and enjoy the activities and traditions October brings, we want to revisit one of our most important priorities: every student feeling safe, welcome, and connected at school. Fall is a good time to reinforce the routines, relationships, and shared expectations that help make our schools places where everyone belongs.

Sebastopol Union School District is committed to a safe, inclusive, and equitable school community where everyone feels valued and respected. Through anti-racism and anti-bias lessons, daily conversations, and restorative circles, students build relationships, learn how their words and actions affect others, and practice being upstanders who support those being hurt or excluded and seek help from a trusted adult.

At Park Side, creating a school where everyone belongs begins with teaching our youngest students how to build friendships, include others, and care for one another. Mrs. Norton, our school counselor, has been visiting classrooms to practice these skills through stories, conversations, and activities. Counselors also introduced fourth graders to an age-appropriate version of the IQEE lesson, helping students recognize hurtful behavior, support others, and understand when to seek help from a trusted adult. Individual counseling and small groups provide additional opportunities to build confidence, empathy, and emotional regulation, which help students feel connected and contribute to a safe, welcoming school community.

Brook Haven teachers have been using Advisory time to teach anti-racism IQEE lessons- Interrupt, Question, Echo, and Educate- and revisit the meaning of RISE: Respect, Integrity, Self-Discipline, and Effort. Through discussions, shared experiences, and activities, students learn how to recognize bias, respond to hurtful comments, and support classmates who may feel excluded. These lessons give students practical ways to be upstanders. Students are also building executive functioning skills, such as organization, planning, and managing their time and responsibilities. Together, these skills and values help students navigate challenges, build healthy relationships, and take an active role in their learning and school community.

Families are essential partners. Conversations at home about kindness, fairness, and inclusion reinforce what students learn at school. We encourage parents and caregivers to model respect, reflect on their own assumptions and biases, and help children recognize how their words and actions affect others. Asking, “Did you notice anyone being left out?” or “How could you help?” can open meaningful conversations. You can find additional resources on our website.

Thank you for helping us keep these lessons present throughout the school year. Together, we can help ensure every child comes to school knowing they are welcome, they are supported, and they belong.

Addressing Budget Concerns

We continue to build on the fiscal recovery plan started last year to address our structural deficit- meaning we spend more each year than we receive. We value the robust programs we have built, but our funding cannot sustain our current level of programming, and we are exploring ways to adjust.

School funding can be confusing. Some funds are restricted to specific uses, such as food service or construction. This means we may make improvements in those areas while reducing spending elsewhere. We appreciate these opportunities to improve our schools, even as we face difficult budget choices.

Together with our labor partners, we are finding ways to live within our budget while supporting the programs that make our schools special. We are approaching these difficult choices with care, keeping students and staff at the center.

Attendance and enrollment both matter. Consistent attendance when students are healthy supports their learning and helps fund our schools. Welcoming more students also strengthens our district, and your positive word of mouth makes a difference for families deciding where to enroll.

Our schools are special places. By staying united, listening to different perspectives, and working through difficult decisions together, we can protect what makes them special and build a sustainable future for our students and staff.

We will continue to share updates as this work moves forward, and you can visit our district budget webpage for more information.

Fresh Flavors Coming To Our Kitchens!

Exciting changes are on the menu at SUSD! Our new central kitchen at Brook Haven is helping bring more freshly prepared meals to students at both schools, with offerings like pesto chicken pasta, pupusas with cabbage slaw, and BBQ pulled pork sandwiches. We’re also incorporating local products from Costeaux Bakery and FEED Cooperative.

California is investing in child nutrition through free school breakfast and lunch for all students, along with funding for kitchen equipment, staff training, and more scratch cooking using fresh, locally grown ingredients. These investments help schools improve both access to meals and the food on students’ trays. In a time of budget cuts, we appreciate this investment as it is helping us expand more healthful opportunities for our students.

Looking ahead, we’re adding more scratch-cooked recipes and planning a Harvest of the Month program featuring Sonoma County produce.

The best feedback is coming from our students! They’re enjoying the updates, showing appreciation for the meals, and looking forward to trying new foods. Their enthusiasm has been especially rewarding for the team working hard to make these changes happen.

Thank you to our Wellness Committee for its commitment, thoughtful input, and continued support as we explore improvements, and to our hardworking food service team for bringing these changes to life. There’s plenty to look forward to at the lunch table!

🏫 October School Board Meeting Highlights

Here’s a quick look at key items from the October 8 Board of Trustees meeting agenda:

The October 8 Board meeting agenda highlighted several priorities for SUSD, including improvements to our food service program, enrollment and class size data, and the district’s financial outlook. The board also heard more about enrollment patterns that help inform our planning for students, staffing, and classrooms.

Fiscal oversight remained a key focus, with agenda items addressing the district’s current financial position and the Sonoma County Office of Education’s approval of our 2026–27 budget, including concerns and required follow-up regarding our fiscal recovery plan.

Additional business included information on our participation in the Community Engagement Initiative, instructional materials sufficiency, technology support services, and Board policy updates.

Together, these topics reflect our ongoing work to support students and staff while planning responsibly for the district’s future.

Our next regular Board meeting is November 12, 2026.

Mobile Museum of Tolerance Visit

An exciting learning experience is rolling onto our middle school campus next week! We look forward to welcoming the Mobile Museum of Tolerance (MMOT) back again for a second time, with all students participating in interactive workshops that bring lessons of empathy, respect, and inclusion to life. An initiative of the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, MMOT connects lessons from history to the choices we make today.

This visit supports our ongoing work to help students recognize bias, stand up against hate, and build a school community where everyone feels safe and valued. We look forward to the conversations this experience will spark and encourage families to keep the learning going at home by asking students what they learned and how they can put it into practice. You can find out more information about the MMOT at their website (mmot.com) or watch this short video highlighting what students can expect during their visit.
