SCHOOL CLASSES SUSPENDED THROUGH APRIL 5

LINDA IRVING, SUPERINTENDENT SEBASTOPOL UNION
MONDAY MARCH 16, 2020

Dear Sebastopol Union School District Families,

With careful consideration of many factors, in these unprecedented times, the district has made the difficult decision to suspend site-based learning in SUSD through April 5th. At-home student learning opportunities will begin on Wednesday, March 25th.

In summary:
● Sebastopol Union School District will suspend in-person classes through April 5th. This includes all district programs, CASTLE, Park Side and Brook Haven.
● Teachers and staff will be working March 23/24 to create lessons for at-home learning that will begin Wednesday, March 25th through at least April 5th, if not longer.
● The plan is to have student work available online or for pick up at the school site beginning March 25th. Principals will be in contact with parents/guardians with an update via ParentSquare.

This decision was made in collaboration with the Sonoma County Department of Health Services (DHS) and the Sonoma County Office of Education. We are implementing these measures to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) through social distancing-- limiting close contact and gatherings. It is important to note that there are currently no known cases of COVID-19 among our students or staff. This decision allows our community to “flatten the curve” and reduce community spread of the virus.

Instruction
Students will be studying at home. Teachers will be working remotely to create instructional opportunities via online and paper packets. Your teacher(s) and principal will be working during the school closure from a safe location to continue to provide student assignments during the closure. Your educators will contact families as soon as possible. The District is working to provide Chromebooks and internet access to families. If you need these please contact your school office. As always, we encourage you to read at home. Please be patient as this process begins.

Meals
We are working with community partners, under the guidance of the state, to provide meals to
students during this unprecedented crisis. SUSD is anticipating using Park Side MPR as a central
location for distribution. There will be more information coming regarding meals.

Child Care
District before and after-school Extended Care at all schools will be suspended. At a minimum,
CASTLE and Preschool will be closed through April 5th.

Mental Health
Continuity of student learning is of great importance for us all, but we are also taking into
consideration the toll this unprecedented event will have on our students and their families. We
are working with counselors to be available to families as needed. To learn about local resources,
call 2-1-1.

COVID-19 Information
We understand there are many concerns around COVID-19, and the amount of information
available can be overwhelming. Sonoma County Office of Education has an up-to-date website
for more information https://www.scoe.org/pub/htdocs/news-archive.html?news_id=1275

For school-related updates, we will continue to do our best to keep you informed. Facts and
circumstances may change quickly so we encourage you to check your ParentSquare emails, the
district website http://www.sebastopolschools.org/ and our district and school Facebook pages.

We know that you will have many questions. We hope to have responses to you over the coming
days and weeks.

Our goal is to provide connection, comfort, and continuity for students during this difficult time.
Please be safe and mindful of your family’s health. We look forward to having our students back
at their schools as soon as possible.
